Covering a cake board to look like a road

You will need

500g White sugarpaste
Black colourpaste, Green colourpaste, Yellow colourpaste (optional)
Icing sugar, Water
Rectangle cake board (mine was 12"x10")
Rolling, Sharp knife, Pizza cutter, Cake smoother
Large star piping nozzle

*****

Colour 300g of the white sugarpaste with black colourpaste (I used sugarflairs liquorice black).

Mix together until almost a uniform grey with just a few streaks of black in it.

Roll out on icing sugar tucking in the sides to give it a rectangle shape rather than oval, to about 3mm (1/8").

Check the paste you've rolled is big enough for your board by placing your board over it.

Rub water over the entire board so there is a thin layer covering it.

Pick the rolled grey sugarpaste up with your rolling pin and lay it over the board.

Smooth it down with the cake smoother.

Trim the edges with a sharp knife in a downwards motion.

Measure approx. 2½cm (1") in from the long edge of the board and using a straight edge and a pizza cutter, trim away the grey paste. do this on both sides.

Colour the remaining white sugarpaste green (I used sugarflairs party green and melon), and mix until nearly uniform leaving the odd streak.

Roll out on icing sugar approx. 3mm (1/8").

Cut in half lengthways with the pizza cutter.

Now cut a strip roughly 5cm (2") wide (this removes some of the weight when trying to position the paste on the board).

Wet the board again and the edge of the grey paste with water.

Position the strip on the board and trim using a sharp knife.

Using a large star piping nozzle (I used Wilton 22, but any will do), and press the star into the green paste to give the illusion of grass tufts.

Finished board ready for the cake and ribbon.
